Get to know Emmett Finnegan – Director at Design Build Search

Tell us about yourself & DB Search

I was born and raised in Belfast, after graduating in 2013 l moved to Australia for a couple of years. Then after some additional traveling I decided it was time to pursue a career. After returning I relocated to Dublin and entered the world of recruitment.

In 2017 I joined DesignBuild Search, at that stage Design Build Search was very much in its infancy. Since then we have growing into a leading construction consultancy working with a range of clients both domestically and internationally across various disciplines.

Tell us about your background?

My background is in Marketing. However, I always worked in a construction capacity during summer holidays or during my time in Australia. I think these combined gave me a solid foundation moving into construction recruitment.

How did you get into recruitment?

Like many I fell into it, after returning from Australia I spoke with a couple of recruitment agencies seeking jobs in marketing. Having spoken with a couple of recruiters they mentioned recruitment as a path, from there I decided to peruse opportunities in recruitment and here I am 7 years later.

How has your background helped you in your role?

Growing up I played and competed in a lot of individual and team sports which helps develop you and helps with discipline and consistency which I think is important in recruitment. Having a background in marketing, onsite experience definitely helps with some of the technical aspects involved in recruitment.

Why did you chose to join DB Search?

Design Build Search was a freshly developed division within the established vertical markets group.  I liked the idea of joining a division at the beginning of its journey and a division where I would be involved in the growth.

What do you like about your role?

The variation within the job and the different personalities you speak with daily. The collaboration within the team and support system in place. I am part of a great team and I enjoy the challenging nature of recruitment trying to provide a solution to a client or opportunity to a candidate.

What makes you stay in DB Search?

The team and the collaboration across the wider company.  I also enjoy the autonomous model which allows you to develop the business and brand across different sectors and internationally.

What is your favourite mantra?

During pre-season training an old football manager would always shout “no one said it was going to be easy” it’s one that always springs to mind.

Where would we find you when you are not recruiting?

If I’m not spending it with the kids, It will probably be on the golf course. A sport I have only recently taken up and wish I started in my younger days.
